Solution Pitch

The Problem

Timor-Leste faces a significant gap in clinical competency and decision-making among its newly expanded primary care sector. Despite increased healthcare access, the quality of care remains suboptimal due to inadequate training, limited access to guidelines, and reliance on informal advice, impacting health outcomes for a population of 1.3 million.

The Solution

MediBot is a clinical decision support AI chatbot that serves as a co-pilot to healthcare workers in Timor-Leste, to address gaps in workforce competency and doctor capacity within a country where medical resources are scarce. Designed to be accessible, the bot is integrated with communication channels widely used by Timor-Leste health workers (Whatsapp), and supports queries in their local languages. Responses are localised and contextualised for Timor-Leste’s primary care practice, as the bot is trained on local clinical care documents, national guidelines, and standards approved by Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation. To support safe use of AI, Medibot supports expert review and community moderation of AI-generated responses, so that the accuracy and relevance of its responses are continuously improved. Beyond Timor-Leste, and in collaboration with WHO, this bot is being considered for deployment in other lower resource settings where healthcare workforce capacity and competency are constrained.
