What specific problem are you solving?

In the United States, there are approximately 40 million low-income, minority students who are falling behind by two years compared to their peers. These students include first- and second-generation immigrants, who make up one out of every three students in higher education and represent 28% of all students. While the U.S. hosts more than 427,000 undocumented students, these communities are often marginalized due to language and cultural barriers and lack of resources in their first language, impacting their ability to actively participate in their own education. This already complex issue takes on further layers when considering gender disparities and neurodiversity. The gender gap in STEM fields manifests early and persists throughout educational and career pathways, with boys twice as likely to show interest in STEM fields by middle school and five times more likely to pursue STEM careers in college. This gap is even more pronounced among low-income and immigrant communities, where girls often lack the resources, support, and role models to foster interest in STEM. Furthermore, neurodiverse students, including those with ADHD, face unique learning challenges that traditional educational experiences often fail to address. Despite possessing skills and perspectives that are highly desirable within STEM disciplines, these students remain significantly underrepresented in these fields, creating a multifaceted and intersectional challenge in STEM education equity.

Feynman is a ground-breaking, interactive, and gamified STEM learning platform that addresses the barriers of gender inequity and cognitive diversity in STEM education. This platform, named in honor of the famed physicist and educator Richard Feynman, is driven by advanced language learning and generative AI technologies from industry leaders such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. Feynman is designed to resonate with learners across various stages and to respond to individual needs effectively.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

Feynman is primarily designed to serve students from underrepresented demographics in the STEM field, including low-income students, minorities, first- and second-generation immigrants, and neurodiverse learners. These populations often encounter significant obstacles in their pursuit of STEM education, which can stem from a variety of factors such as language and cultural barriers, socioeconomic difficulties, and a scarcity of resources that are specifically tailored to their unique learning needs.

Our founder, who is intimately involved with non-profit organizations that focus on teaching coding to girls in the K-12 education range, has firsthand knowledge of these barriers. She has observed how both cognitive and socioeconomic challenges can obstruct her students' paths to reaching their full potential in the STEM fields. As a response, the founder has involved her students in the development process of our current prototype. This approach allows us to address the specific pain points in STEM education, particularly in the areas of mathematics, physics, and computer science. We prioritize our students' feedback in real-time, using their invaluable input to continuously refine and improve the Feynman platform. This direct and ongoing engagement with our target population ensures that we remain attuned to their needs and can adapt our solution accordingly.

Our team is uniquely positioned to deliver Feynman, as our founder herself has navigated the challenging journey that many of our target users face. As an immigrant and a first-generation college student from a STEM family, she pursued her master's degree in physics, a journey that was not without its obstacles. This experience, coupled with her status on the neurodiverse spectrum, has imparted her with a profound understanding of the barriers that underrepresented groups encounter in their pursuit of STEM education.

Her personal story of perseverance and achievement in the face of adversity inspires our team and deeply resonates with the communities we aim to serve. It also ensures that our solutions are grounded in a nuanced understanding of the unique struggles faced by these communities.

In addition to this personal connection, our team lead has been actively involved in community service, serving as a tutor for a non-profit organization in Manhattan that teaches girls to code. This has provided her with a direct insight into the real-world challenges that students from underrepresented groups face in STEM education.

Throughout our solution development process, we actively engage with our target users, incorporating their feedback in real-time to ensure that Feynman is not only responsive to their needs but also reflective of their aspirations. We are applying to the Gender Equity in STEM Challenge to leverage the unique opportunity it presents to overcome multifaceted barriers. As a woman founder, I've faced challenges in raising capital and initial funds, and I understand the nuances of navigating the ecosystem. Our solution has demonstrated the potential in addressing gender inequity in STEM, particularly for underrepresented communities. However, the journey to scale across various frontiers requires comprehensive support, not limited to financial, but also technical guidance, market insight, and cultural understanding. This personal journey has fueled her passion for creating solutions to help others overcome similar barriers.

Our primary impact goal for the next year is to reach and actively engage 50,000 students from underrepresented communities in STEM learning through the Feynman platform. We aim to do this by expanding our partnerships with schools, non-profits, and community organizations serving these communities, and by continuously refining our platform based on user feedback to ensure it meets their unique needs.

Five years from now, we envision Feynman serving over a million students worldwide, transforming the way STEM education is delivered to underrepresented communities. We plan to achieve this by:
