AI-Assisted Rology Teleradiology Platform: Strengthening healthcare access and resilience in fragile contexts through remote diagnostics and AI-driven insights.

Film your elevator pitch.

What specific problem are you solving?

We are addressing the problem of limited access to quality healthcare services, specifically diagnostic imaging, in fragile contexts of Kenya and Egypt, where health systems are strained due to conflicts, natural disasters, and weak governance. Globally, over 1.6 billion people are affected by such issues, leading to poor health outcomes, increased disease burden, and inadequate mental health support.

In Kenya and Egypt, radiologist shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of advanced diagnostic equipment exacerbate the problem. Our solution focuses on utilizing the AI-Assisted Rology Teleradiology Platform to bridge this gap, providing remote diagnostic services and enhancing local capacity.

According to the World Health Organization, there is a global shortage of 4.3 million healthcare professionals, with sub-Saharan Africa facing a deficit of 1.8 million workers. This shortage significantly impacts access to diagnostic services such as radiology. In Kenya, there is an estimated 1 radiologist per 1 million people, while in Egypt, the ratio is around 1 radiologist per 100,000 people. These ratios fall far short of the recommended 10-12 radiologists per 100,000 people.

Our solution addresses the factors contributing to this problem by leveraging AI technology and remote expertise to increase the availability of diagnostic services, reduce the burden on local health systems, and improve overall healthcare access in fragile contexts.

What is your solution?

Our solution is the AI-Assisted Rology Teleradiology Platform, a cloud-based platform that combines artificial intelligence with teleradiology to improve access to diagnostic imaging services in fragile contexts. The platform enables remote radiologists from around the world to provide accurate and timely diagnoses, addressing the shortage of radiologists and reducing the burden on local health systems.

The platform works by connecting health facilities in Kenya and Egypt with a global network of radiologists. Medical images, such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, are securely uploaded to the cloud, where they are processed by AI algorithms to identify potential anomalies and assist in diagnosis. Remote radiologists can then access the images, review the AI-generated insights, and provide their expert interpretation and recommendations.

By using cloud-based technology and AI-driven insights, our platform simplifies the diagnostic process, enhances the accuracy of diagnoses, and reduces the time required for delivering results. This innovative approach ensures that even in fragile contexts, patients receive high-quality diagnostic services, leading to better health outcomes and stronger, more resilient health systems.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

Our solution serves communities in fragile contexts in Kenya and Egypt, specifically those affected by weak governance, conflict, displacement, natural disasters, and systemic inequities. The target population includes underserved individuals such as women and girls, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, older adults, and those living in remote or conflict-affected areas.

These communities are currently underserved due to a shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly radiologists, insufficient infrastructure, and inadequate access to advanced diagnostic equipment. As a result, they often face delayed or incorrect diagnoses, leading to poor health outcomes and increased disease burden.

The AI-Assisted Rology Teleradiology Platform addresses the needs of the target population by:

  1. Expanding access to quality diagnostic services: By connecting local health facilities with a global network of radiologists, our platform ensures timely and accurate diagnoses, even in remote or conflict-affected areas.
  2. Enhancing diagnostic accuracy: The AI component of our platform aids radiologists in identifying potential anomalies, reducing the risk of errors and ensuring better patient outcomes.
  3. Strengthening local capacity: Our platform provides training opportunities for local healthcare professionals and integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, empowering communities to take charge of their healthcare needs.
  4. Promoting equitable access to healthcare: By leveraging technology and remote expertise, our solution helps bridge the gap between urban and rural communities, reducing disparities in access to quality diagnostic services.

Through these efforts, our solution directly and meaningfully improves the lives of the target population by ensuring that they have access to accurate and timely diagnostic services, which are critical for effective treatment and overall well-being.
