Boston, MA, USAProject Summary:
2.5 million Americans develop pressure injuries every year and 60,000 people die from them. Pressure injuries are wounds to the skin and underlying tissue caused by pressure from prolonged contact with surfaces. It is an issue that has an outsized adverse impact on wheelchair users, who have a 50% chance of being affected in their lifetime. The shocking fact is that these outcomes are preventable. We are a team of MIT engineers and entrepreneurs working to develop a responsive wheelchair cushion for veterans and spinal cord injury patients. Harnessing AI and sensing technology, our intelligent surface offers assistive micro-movements, creating pockets of pressure relief across the surface area of the seat. Our goal is to empower millions of wheelchair users nationwide with the technology to take care of their health and thrive on Toppa!Sector
