The Care Economy
Jamii Life
Jamii Life empowers Black and colored health workers and family caregivers through tools and training to deliver high-quality home care to those unable to access or afford it, transforming them into valued members of the workforce.
Solution Pitch
The Problem
The number of people needing care in South Africa is expected to increase from two to five million by 2050. Healthcare is usually provided by women insufficiently trained to influence positive health outcomes. Lost education and income perpetuates poverty in communities where unemployment often exceeds 50%.
The Solution
Jamii Life empowers Black and colored health workers and family caregivers with tools and training to deliver high-quality home care to those unable to care for themselves, transforming them into valued members of society and enabling them to generate income for themselves.
Stats
Thus far, Jamii Life has trained eight healthcare workers (four of whom are employed by Jamii Life), served two patients (on-going), and trained two family members (related to the two patients served).
Market Opportunity
Two million South Africans need help with daily living. Approximately 7% of people can afford private care and 60% have no access to care. Estimated market size of this segment is approximately $1 billion, noting that more and more people are unable to pay for care services.
Organization Highlights
Jamii Life partners with a Physical Rehabilitation Hospital that provides medical care and acute and sub-acute rehabilitation treatment for people with a wide range of disabilities caused by disease or injuries. Jamii Life carers train with them in a hospital environment and gain valuable rehabilitation and nursing support skills. The hospital also contracts Jamii Life services on an as-needed basis, helping to fully utilize health workers and generate additional income.
Jamii Life is the joint winner of the Skoll Early Venture Award and the recipient of the Echoing Green fellowship for social entrepreneurship and innovation.
