Gideon Lichfield is the global editorial director of WIRED, leading the content strategy for the brand across all platforms and markets.

Lichfield has spearheaded the merger of  the US and UK editions of WIRED into a single newsroom, guiding WIRED towards a new era focused on global challenges. Issues that have a worldwide impact such as climate change, global data security, and the future of democracy are at the forefront of WIRED’s reporting.

With a global footprint of 36 million monthly unique visitors and 25 million combined social media followers, WIRED continues to be the authority on the world’s most pressing issues and the role technology plays in them. On top of its readership, WIRED has 8.9 million subscribers on YouTube with popular series such as WIRED Autocomplete Interview and Obsessed. WIRED has also been recognized for its top-notch reporting with several accolades, including 17 National Magazine Awards, 22 Webby Awards, and over 170 Society of Publication Design Awards, and 22 Webby Awards.

In July 2021, WIRED Studios announced the production of a documentary film based on senior writer Jason Parham’s three-part WIRED feature, “A People’s History of Black Twitter,” which will provide a definitive account of the origins, growth, and impact of Black Twitter. WIRED has also hosted several events, including RE:WIRED, WIRED Smarter, and WIRED Health, all of which bring together the top names in technology, business, and science. In 2019, WIRED Consulting was re-launched as a unique business offering, connecting organizations with WIRED’s network, knowledge and brand.

Lichfield is a longtime reporter and leader in the tech space. He began his career at The Economist, where he launched the science desk and was editorial head of Economist Education, an internal startup aimed at business executives, and then joined Quartz at the company’s inception, where he led the newsroom, developing the ethics policy and style guide. He also edited the Quartz Daily Brief, which has been credited with kickstarting the email newsletter trend that has since spread throughout the industry. Prior to joining Condé Nast, Lichfield was the editor in chief at MIT Technology Review, where he was responsible for modernizing the 120-year-old title. Lichfield had a one year fellowship at the Data & Society Research Institute, and he also served as an adjunct professor at New York University, teaching graduate courses in foreign reporting.

A native of the United Kingdom who speaks five languages, Lichfield is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Bristol University.
